A Not so Typical Veterans Day

This year, for the first time in many years, I am excited to celebrate my Veterans Day. For some, after getting out of the military, we have a hard time readjusting to the civilian world, and Veterans Day can simply be a reminder that we have yet to find our "place".

For some, this day is about freebies and discounts, this isn't me, in fact, listening to a bunch of grown men ask for handouts and discounts makes me cringe. If a Veteran is truly in desperate times, there is no shame in asking, otherwise, in my opinion we should be striving to set an example.

Many civilians are in awe of service members, and in their own way, place us on a pedestal. Most of us are not worthy of such praise (myself included), but we can also be a symbol of hope and pride for those men and women. If this is the case, if there is only one person you know, whom looks up to you, you have a responsibility to set the example for them. Handouts are not the good example.

For others, this day is a celebration, a look back, great memories, terrible memories, whatever it may be, it is a day to be thankful for one another, for those before us, beside us, and those who will stand up and come after us.

I was fortunate enough to spend the day, in a warm home, surrounded by family, baking delicious fall meals and deserts while laughing and playing with my children.  Days like this make me ever thankful for everything I have.

There are many veterans on this day who will not be thanked, many struggling with homelessness, drugs, alcohol, PTSD and much more. I hope we can come together as a country to help these men and women.

I hope you will take the time, to spend time, with your loved ones on this day. I hope, if you are able, you do your part, to help those who are unable, or are amidst struggle.
